Prepare to be amazed! Final Fantasy VII Remake on Switch 2 isn't just a port; it's a remarkable fusion of past and present-gen gaming.
Digital Foundry, the go-to experts for all things tech in gaming, have released their in-depth analysis of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade port on the new Switch 2. And the verdict? It's a technical triumph! They've put it head-to-head with its original PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 counterparts, and the results are genuinely impressive.
But here's where it gets exciting... This Switch 2 version is described as a hybrid marvel, blending elements from both the PS4 and PS5 versions, and in many aspects, it actually surpasses the PS4's original performance. Imagine experiencing the gritty details of the Sector 7 Slums, like those iconic doors, with a level of texture fidelity that brings you much closer to the PS5 experience than the PS4 ever could. Even the ground textures and the clarity of in-game signs have seen a significant upgrade, making the world of Midgar feel more vibrant and alive.
And this is the part most people miss... While the visual upgrades are substantial, it's not a complete PS5 replication across the board. Some elements, such as shadows and character pop-in, lean more towards the PS4's capabilities. However, Square Enix clearly aimed to capture the stunning lighting of the PS5 Intergrade release, and the result is a visually striking game on the Switch 2 that truly shines.
For those who crave smooth gameplay, you'll be pleased to know that performance is rock-solid in both docked and handheld modes. While there are some minuscule dips when you're rapidly panning the camera around specific areas like Aerith's house in handheld mode, for the most part, you're looking at a stable 30 frames per second. The resolution hits a crisp 1080p in docked mode, and again, the clarity is a noticeable step up from the PS4 version.
So, it seems the Switch 2 is off to a fantastic start with this title. The real test, however, will undoubtedly be Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Given its expansive open-world nature, it's a much bigger challenge. But with the game performing reasonably well on the Steam Deck, our hopes are high for a similar, if not better, experience on the Switch 2.
Now, Square Enix, we're all waiting with bated breath for that release date announcement!
