Job Market Update: NCRC & KRA Cancel Positions, New Openings by NSSF, KICD & KUCCPS (2026)

Job Seekers in Kenya Face Mixed Signals as Some Agencies Cancel Openings While Others Announce New Opportunities

In a surprising turn of events, the job market in Kenya has seen a wave of cancellations and new openings, leaving many applicants in a state of uncertainty. But here’s where it gets controversial: while some government agencies are pulling back on recruitment, others are actively seeking talent, raising questions about the underlying reasons for these contrasting moves.

The National Crime Research Centre (NCRC) has abruptly cancelled a recruitment exercise for multiple positions previously advertised. In a notice issued on its MyGov platform on February 3, 2025, the NCRC declared that all job vacancies posted on August 12, 2025, are no longer valid. These positions spanned senior management, research, and administrative roles, including Assistant Director Research, Assistant Director Finance, and Senior Knowledge Management Officer, among others. Notably, the Centre did not provide any reasons for the cancellation, leaving applicants in the dark. And this is the part most people miss: without an explanation, speculation about budget cuts, restructuring, or other internal issues is bound to arise. The NCRC reiterated its commitment to being an equal opportunity employer and warned the public against fraudulent recruitment schemes, urging applicants to rely solely on official communications.

Similarly, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) cancelled an earlier job advertisement for the position of Deputy Commissioner in charge of Cargo Scanning and Monitoring, originally slated for applications until December 2026. Like the NCRC, the KRA did not immediately disclose the reasons for this decision, adding to the air of mystery surrounding these cancellations.

But here’s the silver lining: while some doors are closing, others are opening wide. The National Social Security Fund (NSSF), the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) have all launched recruitment drives, offering a glimmer of hope for job seekers.

NSSF announced vacancies for several senior management positions, including Manager for Corporate Communications, ICT, and Human Resources. Applications must be submitted by February 23, 2026, either by post or hand delivery to the Managing Trustee/CEO at Social Security House in Nairobi. A bold move, considering the digital age, but one that ensures accessibility for all applicants.

KICD, on the other hand, advertised multiple openings for assistant directors and senior curriculum development officers across diverse disciplines such as special needs education, languages, and marine technology. Applications are due by February 27, 2026, with full details available on the institute’s website. This move highlights the growing demand for specialized expertise in Kenya’s education sector.

KUCCPS also joined the fray, announcing vacancies for senior and mid-level positions, including directors in ICT, finance, and human resources, as well as drivers. Here’s where it gets interesting: KUCCPS requires all applications to be submitted online through its careers portal, a stark contrast to NSSF’s traditional approach. Applicants must create profiles, complete online forms, and upload their CVs and certificates. The application window runs from February 3, 2026, to February 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

A thought-provoking question for our readers: Are these cancellations a sign of economic strain within certain agencies, or are they part of a larger restructuring effort? And how do these contrasting recruitment strategies—traditional vs. digital—reflect the evolving job market in Kenya? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s spark a conversation about the future of employment in our country.
