Privacy Policy
Checin privacy policy: what data we collect, why, how long we keep it, and your rights under GDPR.
Last updated: June 2026.
Who we are
Checin is an editorial project published by Margaret Hollis (acting as data controller). Contact: contact@checin.org. This privacy policy explains what personal data we collect when you visit checin.org, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and what rights you have under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and similar laws.
What we collect
- Server logs. When you visit, our hosting provider (Scaleway) logs your IP address, the page requested, the user-agent string, and the HTTP status code. These logs are kept for up to 12 months for security and abuse-prevention.
- Local browser storage. If you bookmark articles using the “saved articles” feature, the list is stored in your browser’s localStorage. We do not see it. Clearing your browser data removes it.
- Contact form / email. If you write to contact@checin.org we keep your message and email address for as long as needed to handle your request, and then up to 12 months in case of follow-up. We do not add you to any newsletter list.
- No third-party trackers by default. Checin currently does not embed analytics scripts, advertising pixels, or social-media widgets that profile you.
Cookies
Checin uses only strictly-necessary technical storage (the saved-articles localStorage entry described above). No advertising or analytics cookies are set. See our Cookies Policy for details.
Legal basis
Server logs and basic security data are processed under the “legitimate interest” basis (GDPR Art. 6.1.f). Email exchanges are processed under the “execution of pre-contractual or contractual steps” basis when you contact us, and under “legitimate interest” for record-keeping afterwards.
Your rights
If you are an EU/UK/Swiss resident, you can ask us to:
- Confirm what data we hold about you.
- Correct or update your data.
- Delete your data (subject to legal-retention exceptions).
- Restrict or object to processing.
- Receive a portable copy of your data.
To exercise these rights, email contact@checin.org. We respond within 30 days. You may also lodge a complaint with your national data-protection authority — for example the CNIL in France (cnil.fr).
Updates
We will update this page when our processing changes (for example, if we add an analytics tool). The “last updated” date at the top will reflect the change.
